Egwene SACRIFICED her life for her beliefs! Just because you found her character irritating doesn't mean she wasn't a hero in the series.

It would depend on how you wanted to look upon her, some would see a highly accomplished and forceful individual who was doing her best to help the WT and the world during very trying times, other would view her as an arrogant bully who would stop at nothing to get what she wants. I generally saw her as both.
Just because I don't idolize her characterization doesn't mean I didn't enjoy reading the character.

But I see her as a strong character throughout the series. The folks who see her as a bully and arrogant baffle me to be honest. But I suspect none of these people have been in positions of authority at a young age either. Egwene was forced into some very difficult situations and had to learn to deal with women with hundreds of years of experience without allowing herself to become a puppet. I see no shame or wrong headedness in a person who is doing the job she was given. Is she someone I would want to personally be friends with? I very much doubt it, but that doesn't mean I don't have respect for her.

I globally agree. Egwene was always meant to be as ambiguous as Rand.

Egwene played the role she had to play, was the sort of leader the WT needed, and had the necessary ties to Rand to make it work.

But this time around, she wasn't needed to keep everything together after Rand's failure as in one of her previous incarnations.

The Pattern didn't kill her. She made her own choice of how her role would end, her own sacrifice like LTT who did the right thing and killed himself.

But I guess it's very likely the Pattern would have cast down Egwene sooner than later in some other way, no longer having a Rand to balance her out.

She was the leader the WT needed for the LB. She was not the woman it needed after TG. Much like Siuan/Elaida had some aspects Egwene needed, Egwene had some aspects of her successor, preparing the WT for Cadsuane. Cadsuane is another who thinks the Aes Sedai aren't what they should be. She is forceful, but she hates to lead others. She will be the sort of leader who will rapidly get exasperated if the Hall and the sisters don't take responsibilities and try to look for her to solve everything.

She wholeheartedly supports Rand's Peace too (Brandon certain to have Perrin smell her pride when Rand outlined it, Egwene was rather horrified), and she's much better placed than Egwene to deal with Tuon, and has far more experience with male channelers, and a much better understanding of Logain. She also kept herself completely aside from the WT conflict. Cadsuane is also much more likely to focus the WT on wiping out any remnant of the Shadow and focusing her efforts on completing the alliance of the various groups of channelers Egwene foresaw (but intended to be a female alliance against Rand and the Asha'man and against the Seanchan...), preparing the world for the likely conflict with the Sharans. In the middle of the conflict, she took time to remind Elayne she'd return to the matter of the Kin eventually, and took like the Hall and Silviana to call her Elayne Sedai - a none too subtle reminder that in their eyes they considered to have agreed to let an Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah be the commander of the Light, not a Queen. It's a standard WT spin. If the WT had its way eventually the histories wouldn't say the WT lost the leadership to the Queen of Andor, it would say the Amyrlin took direct command of the WT's forces and with the Dragon the Hall agreed to let Elayne Sedai of the Green Ajah lead the rest of the forces of the Light. It would probably say as well that Egwene has made her own alliance with the Wise Ones and the Wise One Aviendha to whom she was very close convinced the Dragon to make the Aiel the enforcers of the Peace, while the WT and the WO pulled the strings behind. That's probably not the version Cadsuane will teach to the novices now, the rest very much depend on who her successors will be.

Egwene pretty much died determined to work her ass off after TG restore the political prestige, influence and authority of the WT despite having signed Rand's Covenant. She would have played the Wise Ones card for all it's worth to regain massive influence over how the Aiel enforced peace (and might have found herself in a conflict with the Aiel), and she was heading for a conflict with Elayne. She didn't believe Rand had given the WT the role in the Covenant it should have and would have worked to wriggle her way back to the role she thought it should have once the Shadow was dealt with. Cadsuane, however, didn't get involved in any of that, didn't lift a finger to help the WT keep its central role. She kept safely away from the WT through all of this. She's got about as good a relationship with the WO as Egwene did, but has no secret agenda to bring them under WT authority somehow. She also has a much better position toward the SF - and leverage with their next leader Harine. Egwene had tangled herself very badly - and was already distancing herself from the SF. Egwene also had one hell of an half-baked plan to deal with the revelation the Binder deprived the AS of half their lifespan. Elayne doomed a whole aspect of it offering a better deal to the Kin, while Egwene had not realized that sending recruits to the WO and SF, the AS wouldn't accept long to be the only ones bound like that, the only female channelers not trusted enough to simply act as they should without a device forcing them to. It won't be long before Cadsuane learns that the longer lifespans of AOL Aes Sedai isn't a matter of a steep decline in saidar potential but of using the Binder. She'll learn the truth from the Hall in the early days of her rulership.
