1000 is not a tiny sample, if they are a representative sample. And if they are not, I am very curious as to the mechanism that would preferentially cause weaker women to want to become Aes Sedai.

Why do you assume there's a mechanism?


Becaus if there isn't you would expect the 1000 novices to form a representative sample of the population. Because 1000 people is plenty enough to say something about the probability of only 200 of them being strong enough, and it's so unlikely as to be impossible.
