Time was, I would have laughed out loud at the very idea and averted my eyes in dismay at the idea of someone else fucking around with WoT. I saw a couple of horrific examples like 10 years ago, and since then the term fanfiction has had some extremely negative associations for me.

And then along came Brandon Sanderson. When I see what actually gets printed between a folded up Daryl K Sweet masterpiece these days, I think I'd actually take a stab at reading something else, or at least something written by someone whose heart I know is in the right place.
