The problem is that gravity is a form of acceleration, so in order to "mimic" the effects of gravity, one wouldn't simply need a platform to be constantly moving upwards, but one to be constantly accelerating upwards. And while it's possible, I think the only way this would be the case, and not have had characters mention it, would be for the air to be moving in tandem with the skimming platform.

Who said ANYTHING was mimicking the effects of gravity? The point that EVERYONE ELSE in this discussion got was that we were talking about a purely mental phenomenon. That's because we are all sufficiently knowledgeable about WoT (the topic of our discussion), that we all understand when we talk about this sort of thing that its in the character's heads. Why on earth would the skimming place "fake" gravity? The rules of time and space don't apply, so whatever physics factoids you picked up about the way gravity works don't either. The point is that people do not stay on the platform because of gravity but because of the "rules" regarding association with the channeler. They have no point of reference so they don't know what direction they would be moving, and it could be up, since the first couple of times someone is seen traveling through that place, they are going up. The books specifically state that there is nothing like air movement or any other sensory phenomena to indicate direction or speed of travel, just an awareness by the channeler (and possibly his passengers), that they are moving, and then not so it's now exit time. How does Newton explain THAT?

Anyway, this is all gobbledigook, since it's a fantasy novel and the "skimming" place doesn't really exist.
Yeah, thanks. We kind of got that. Why the hell are you then? Begging the question is just refusing to engage and BS tactic to avoid being contradicted. If you don't want to play, DON'T. Otherwise, this is just a drive-by argument, trying to say your piece and get out without getting critiqued or contradicted.

Alternative theory - maybe they don't fall. Maybe the platform rises away from them. - 26/11/2011 09:39:37 PM 691 Views
