Actually, Mat did die in the Waste. He was hung and Rand had to restart his heart when he came out of the Ter'angreal. If your heart has stopped and you aren't breathing, you are dead. Mat was dead and Rand revived him. Had he actually been alive and Rand did what he did, it would have killed him. He just wasn't dead long enough for his body to fully shut down. That takes a while.


That the Aelfinn's Prophecy refered to Mat's "death" in Caemlyn, after Rahvin's lightning strike.
