The Aelfinn gave Rand this answer on the question on how to survive TG. He won't survive, if he "normally" dies. Obviously it's a typical tricky riddle by the Aelfinn, and therefore Rand has to figure out with Alivia's help how he can achieve the apparently impossible (like he eventually figured out how to Cleanse saidin).
Since there are other Prophecies, which indicate that Rand is at the same time somehow dead AND alive, IMO the most likely explanation is that Rand has to fake his death convincingly, letting Logain take his role to deceive the Shadow. The introduction of the blunt dagger, which hides you from the Shadow, strongly indicates the same. That will IMO also be the reason why Rand has to kill Moridin before he faces the DO. Because of their balefire link faking his death won't be possible otherwise.
Besides that, I don't see who would or could forcible turn Rand to the Shadow, if he already defeated the Shadow. It's also not clear then, why of all people Alivia has to help him die (which is explicitly mentioned in the books as not being the same as simply "kill Rand" ).

I've heard all about the "fake death theory" regarding Rand, and I'm not so sure that fits the criteria. After all, faking a death isn't actually dying, and the riddle says straight out, "to live you must die". It's not, "to live you must appear to die".
I do think Rand will have to kill Moridin before the last battle, as well, but only because I think that may cure his "sickness" when he touches saidin.
Thirteen black Aes Sedai and thirteen myrdraal could still turn Rand to the shadow after the DO is resealed. I doubt all darkfriends and shadowspawn drop what their doing when the bore is patched, and I doubt everyone will even know right away that it happened.
I always figured Logain was just going to take over the Black Tower after he and his loyal ashaman defeat Taim, based on Min's viewing of Logain stepping over a body onto a black stone. The black stone is most likely the platform Taim speaks from, and IIRC, the viewing doesn't specify whose body he steps over (but I think Min would have reacted if it had been Rand's).
I excel at three things: Drinkin' beer, eatin' large quantities of mexican food in one sitting, and sporclin'.
