So, essentially, Rand should have done the DO's work before destroying him?

Why is this guy the hero then? Why is he a savior?
This isn't some personal contest between Rand and the DO. Rand's personal credentials as a stanch resistor of the Dark One are less established than the Seanchan and the White Tower. As Dark Rand, ready to seriously harm the Pattern in his quest for victory, he certainly did more damage to Creation than the Seanchan or the White Tower could ever hope to do.
I doubt that Rand would even do any WT bashing in the meeting at Merrilor. Their less than perfect track record is nothing at all compared to his flagrant deviations from the straight path. Egwene, with all the inside knowledge she has gotten from Nynaeve, would basically destroy his credibility in a minute.
And I think we saw Rand acknowledge that in ToM. While he has a different perspective than the WT, he recognizes that neither side is absolutely wrong, and the only way to move forward is through a genuine cooperation between them. Too bad that didn't result in him actually discussing his plans with Egwene as she requested.

What Rand did to clear out the trollocs in TOM was plenty big enough to do what you suggest.
