BTW, refresh my memory: the initiate at the Black Tower - was he able to create large gateways or just small ones?
Gateways and shields are two things that are influenced by the channeler's strength according to several sources in the books, Androl's gateways breaks that rule. He should not be able to make gateways let alone bigger than anyone else's.
The Kin woman's shield bent instead of breaking when Nyaneve tried to break it. Shields break when you push on them, not bend. So not just the weave, but behavior of the weave as well.
