Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.
She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita.

...how are these words supposed to 'paint beautiful pictures'?
The tempo and the music of the language are interesting in themselves. The language of Nabokov can become as absorbing as the story he used it to tell (more so, I would say. The interest of his novels - as far as I can remember from reading him 20 years ago, resides mostly in the prose itself and his interesting observations of human nature. The stories themselves... bof! ). I wouldn't say "it paints beautiful pictures" for myself though, it's rather beautiful, evocative language. Prose with a high poetic value.
That said, it's also an exceptionally good first paragraph. A lot of the essence of the novel is in it.
Can someone explain to me how Jordan is not a particularly good writer?
