That is the point. No one matters but Rand. Everyone else is irrelevant. The actions of Egwene, Matt, a random farmer, a bird, an ant, all of these are irrelevant. The Wheel runs around Rand. If Rand loses, then the Wheel loses. Reality itself loses.
There's a vast deal of difference between "Rand is the most important" and "Rand is the only one that matters".
I can prove in a hundred ways that if his clique did not do what they did and were not what they were, the world would have been doomed by now.
But I need just two simple pieces of evidence:
1)In the AoL, while the final sealing of the DO was an act of LTT, the opposition of Latra Pose was just as critical in saving the world. In the past age, we are definitely certain that one other person's actions mattered just as much as the Dragons. It stands to reason the same is the case now.
2) Min's vision of the swarming points of light. If Rand were ALL that mattered, he alone should be enough to push back the darkness. But he isn't. Its only when the select group of people who're close to him are around him that we see the Light winning. That's conclusive proof that Rand isn't all that matters,
Rand is the Great Serpent

This. There's a reason one of his archetypes is the Fisher King. *NM*

The issue is that the Fisher King story is about the Land, not the People

But the chess analogy is what I'm seeing - the Dragon is necessary in degree not in total.

I, personally, like it. It makes sense for the Dragon to be an incarnation of the Serpent.
