When is this shown to be the case?
Rand has the option of destroying the world, and there was no one else to influence him in any way.
Certainly, the Pattern played a role in his choice. As he himself said, he wouldn't have won through but for the people he knew and who loved him. But that doesn't mean he didn't have a choice.
Same with everyone else. Isn't the voice telling Rand in EotW that the choice to fight Ishy is his ample proof that choice does exist?
That is the point. No one matters but Rand. Everyone else is irrelevant. The actions of Egwene, Matt, a random farmer, a bird, an ant, all of these are irrelevant. The Wheel runs around Rand. If Rand loses, then the Wheel loses. Reality itself loses.
Rand is the Great Serpent

This. There's a reason one of his archetypes is the Fisher King. *NM*

The issue is that the Fisher King story is about the Land, not the People

But the chess analogy is what I'm seeing - the Dragon is necessary in degree not in total.

I, personally, like it. It makes sense for the Dragon to be an incarnation of the Serpent.
