I agree. I definitely got the impression that he willingly went somewhere, not that he'd died.
The only problem I have with that being an explanation for where Elayne and Aviendha have gotten to is what seems to be an overwhelming sense of duty they each have to their people. I just have a hard time buying that they leave with the world in such disorder and in such a state of tension.
