Gestures and Weaves go hand in hand and since flows originate from the body you can logically darius_sedai Send a noteboard - 05/02/2011 05:45:00 PM

Rand could feel the Source ebbing while Lanfear was shielding him. It was his only clue, so he knew where the weave was. When she later used pain weaves he didn't know where they were, so he mentioned that he needed to strike blindly. Luckily he found his target.

Lanfear had a warning that he would try something when he tried to catch her in Air. After that she probably started placing defensive measures. Its the only reasonable way she could slice a rain of blows. The fact that he could force her back against the wagon implies that she had an instant's warning to react, and each time it got closer. I actually think Rj portrayed it superbly, which is why Rand showed such remorse that he didn't use lightning or fire.

figure out where to aim your cutting weave.

At the Cleansing, Verin similarly knew she was being attacked by Graendal, who was reversing her weaves, and Verin managed to defend herself up to a point (RIP Kumira), so I wouldn't be shocked if body language played a big part in figuring out your defensive strategy when you cannot see or sense weaves ...

We also know that AS telegraph many of their weaves by making motions etc, and we know that if you learn a weave that includes a gesture it becomes "locked" into your ability to make the weave. there is a quote out there about Sisters knowing who taught someone simply by the way they gestured when making certain weaves (i.e. fireballs).

It's possible Lanfear is just noticing that when Rand is making a certain gesture that he's begun a weave ... not that hard to guess where the origination point is going to be from there, especially if he's making specific gestures (the was we see LTT need his hands in KOD to make some weaves). She would have also had the added benefit of knowing LTTs ways very intimately and may have been seeing a very familiar foe.
