I think the Shadow was playing both sides in the civil war ˥ɐ ʎpu∀ɹ Send a noteboard - 18/12/2010 01:20:07 PM
Remember that the Shadow's plans for Caemlyn involved Elayne becoming queen; they spent a great deal of effort sending people like Hanlon and Duhara to try to control her, their Black Ajah mole never tried to assassinate her, and they had more than enough spies inside the city to know that Elayne's army could defend Caemlyn against Arymilla. So on the eve of an attack, Jaq Lounalt gets into Sylvase's good graces, someone who he expects will switch to Elayne's side after the defeat, to therefore get another inside man in the Palace.

Elayne was the only thing keeping the other 4 houses from uniting against Arymilla. Of course they didn't try to assassinate her, because Dyelin would have the instant support of 10 houses.

IIRC Elayne would have trouble holding the city if Arymilla got her forces inside. But the one thing they didn't want was a united Andor, which is why they planned in invasion soon after Elayne captured the throne. And Lounalt's actions allowed him to get inside the palace whoever won that battle.
