Similar to the Roman war god Mars (which is also the red planet). Besides that, I believe e.g. also THE hero Achilles was described with red-hair.

Aren't Greeks generally swarthy in appearance? How could Achilles be red haired?

I take note of the mythological link you have highlighted, but I come back to my question: How many fictional heroes are red haired?

Zorro
Batman
Superman
Jon Snow
Conan the Barbarian
Tarzan
Wolverine
Aragorn

The vast majority are dark haired. Then you get the odd blond pretty boy protagonist as well, but I cannot recall a single red head before Rand.

Rand: Does his red hair make it difficult to imagine him as a hero for some of you too? - 05/12/2010 01:06:54 PM 2339 Views
I think the Norse god Tyr was often portrayed with red-hair - 05/12/2010 01:18:28 PM 2332 Views
