I am sure this list will get much longer after AMoL, but after reading ToM I am struck by how needless some of the characters actually are.
1. Nicola- What the hell was the point of spending so much time on Nicola only to have her die in such an unceremonious way? Will we ever even see her Birgitte wannabe friend Areina again?
It's something called 'bad writing'.
2. Masema- What a let-down. So many chapters describing Masema, only to see him die so quickly.
It's called 'wasting our time'.
3. Graendal- What the hell was point of saving Graendal only to have her bundle at a plot she didn't even need to be involved in? If Graendal doesn't do anything significant in AMoL, her escape of death will have been one of the most pointless things in all of WoT.
It's called 'the disney syndrome'.
4. Asunawa- Asunawa seemed so pointless after his hasty death. This chapter just felt so rushed.
Who ever gave a damn about the Whitecloaks since books 2 anyways.
I am sure there are many more characters that can be added to this list. What are your top choices?

Yeah, while you're busy not believing that, you should believe in things like the One Power too.

If Rand was one of the supporting heroes, maybe. But he's the "messiah" character

We haven't had a Rand POV, so I don't think you can say for certain that it's random.
