Also, he surely lost many battles, as the Shadow advanced progressively during the War. The CK and Sealing were their last-ditch plans to stop from being overrun, remember?

Then again, I suppose that's not something that should've been revealed in an online 8-page story RJ put out. I do agree that emotional aspects may make a key difference though. There's no reason it can't be humility...


It was a victory at great cost yet victory nonetheless.
I seem to remember a scene where Rand is thinking to himself that he had let his pride lead him to defeat (after the conflict with Seanchan in Illian), and LT proclaiming that he had never lost.
The DO/Shadow probably used a similiar tactic that the allies just against Napoleon where they wouldn't attack him straight on, but instead would focus on his armies that were not under his direct command. This might also explain the shadow's reluctance to attack Rand straight on.
