You don't get the title man of the age for your achievements in one field. He was probably like Teddy Roosevelt and had a great deal of skill in a broad range of topics.
But, we never really hear about his achievements in the areas which are neither military nor politics, except for his skill and strength in the OP. If only, I could know more about that.
He indulged it even during his top secret war time meetings with FDR at Casablanca, but it's not why we remember his name.
