Superficial.
... murder is superficial, but attempting to get some stability before the Last Battle is a power grab by a megalomaniac...
That wasn't the argument. Conquest by words or by swords is completely irrelevant as to whether Elayne is aggrandising her power.
That is utter and complete bull shit. Elayne sought Cairhein's throne because Rand had made her a legitimate contender who wouldn't have to fight a huge war to get the throne. She wouldn't have bothered, otherwise.
And as for the rest of those nations, Elayne, again, wasn't working with the aim of aggrandizing her power. Which is kind of why some of those (like the Two River and by extension Ghealdan) ended up in her kingdom.
And if you doubt that she is willing to use military force where words will fail, keep in mind that she was going to use the Band of the Red Hand to enforce her rule on Cairhien before she got a better idea.
You clearly suck at politics. She was going to use the Cairheinin portion of the Band as a police force against bandits. Not against the regular armies of Cairhein. The whole thing was to have been symbolic, a show of her concern for Cairhein and her ability to offer stability and protection. There was no intention of starting a war, no matter what was in the offing.
Remember that she was willing to go to war with Perrin on the eve of the Last Battle.
When? In which damn book did this happen?
So about the nobility.

I don't have any problems with this - they are trying to get more power to survive.

If that power is needed to survive, how will those she takes it from survive?
