Maybe he died, then healed? We don't know exactly how the 'shadowspawn die when they enter gateways' works, so who knows. Apparently it doesn't work on golem though. That was one of the theories in the '50 ways to kill a golem' thing that went around a few years ago. Of course, pushing one off a skimming platform was another one, so whatever works.
