I've always wondered how the 13x13 trick work. Does it destroy everything about the person in question, enabling the DO to stuff whatever he feel like in the empty body or does the 13x13 trick "merely" supress all "good" instincts of the person in question?

Tarna's whole opinion toward Taim and the Asha'man changed after she was with them privately. Rather than desiring to leave, she wants to stay and agrees with their arguments. That could still be compulsion except for the other descriptions of her. For example.

"The woman [Tarna] looked up, and Pevara froze. There was something different in Tarna's eyes, something cold. She'd always been a distant one, but this was worse. Tarna smiled, a grimace that looked completely unnatural on her face. Like the smile on the lips of a corpse."

When thinking about Tarna later, Pevara thinks that "the coldness-almost lifelessness-she'd seen in Tarna's eyes still chilled her." And then later when Pevara is plotting with others about leaving, she knows she can no longer trust Tarna to be part of their plans.

Based on what...someone...I don't remember if it was RJ or Brandon said about the 13x13 trick, it doesn't destroy your personality, it just removes all good desires and enhances the more evil peices of the personality until they control you. To the point where you accept the DO as your master, etc. That certainly does sound like the 13x13 trick. And Brandon said it would come up at least once in the last two books. Tarna is a good one to use it on...A servant of the Light, but so cold and distant that you don't really have that much of a connection with her. And its easy to see how that could be enhanced to such a degree that you are barely human anymore, while still having the same basic personality.
