Did you forget the very first PoV Darkfriend in the series? Cannoli Send a noteboard - 23/10/2010 03:27:25 PM

As for the other crimes you attribute to them, the only known case of murder by the Children was by the same renegade officer and rapist.

TGH (The Shadow in Shienar) - Bornhold suppressed the growl that rose in his throat. Pacified. He wondered if the bodies had been piled outside the village, or if they had been thrown into the river. It would be like the Questioners, cold enough to kill an entire village for secrecy and stupid enough to throw the bodies into the river to float downstream and trumpet their deed from Alcruna to Tanchico.

Is mass murder not a crime now, or are you seriously going to pimp this as 'war' where anything goes? Actually, they're just marching around looking for trouble as usual, and the Questioners are purging the way for them. There's also no PoV trap here - this is from Bornhold himself. Not only that, but Bornhold suggests that this sort of event is not unique, and that the Questioners are not averse to radical activities, and are so clumsy in their bloodlust that they advertise their atrocities to the entire surrounding area due to stupidity alone.

Let's see a single event in the Tower's flawed history that comes even close to this event that hardly stands out in Whitecloak daily activites.
How about the murder of Sahra Covenry, the slaughter in Fal Dara, Temaile's ideas of fun, the torture and murder of that Kinswoman in LoC and innumerable other acts? Or did you forget that the incident you cite was ALSO the work of a Darkfriend! You DO remember that Jaichim Carridin was the commander of that project, and Bornhald's final command to Byar is to report on the actions of the Questioners to Pedron Niall. Plainly, he does NOT think this is usual, or has faith that such behavior will not be tolerated by the Lord Captain Commander. There is no indication that 'Bors' was acting normally either, since Niall reprimands him for screwing up his normal mission. Bors was acting under Ba'alzamon's orders in that operation and for the external impression of his actions was threatened with being turned over to his own Questioners.

In that same chapter Bornhold says that the Questioners are defined by their mastery of torture and that they decide guilt even before they begin. How is that 'acting in the name of the Light'? They don't even investigate the darkfriends properly, and force a confession if they feel like one, as said from a Lord Captain himself. By your analogy we might as well hang a pig and burn it, and say that 'at least the local populace are against witchcraft' when in actual fact they don't know how to investigate, take most of their delight from the act of torture and execution, and most importantly, kill the WRONG targets.
Bornhald is disgusted at the excesses of a commander secretly working for the Shadow, and like all the other NORMAL Children, resents the Questioners and notes how they act apart from the others and are not like real Children of the Light at all. They are one of those politically necessary encumbrances that groups which wield power for good or ill must endure, despite their disagreement with them. You claim they don't investigate properly, but we see no evidence of how they investigate one way or another, only the claims of their enemies and the sullen resentment of people they chastise for their shortcomings (who, despite your claims, are generally alive to piss and moan). We have seen no cases of the Children hanging the innocent in a book, and the one authorized execution (as opposed to atrocities in the field by Darkfriends) is of people we know to have been guilty all along.
Anyway, give me a man who stirs up passions against the Shadow and inadvertently motivates some illiterate peasant to go too far and sweep out an undesirable scumbag who happens to be innocent of Darkfriending, if nothing else, than the woman who terrorizes and traumatizes a loyal servant for merely inquiring about the existence of the Black Ajah and thus allows the most dangerous Darkfriend group in the world to thrive unchallenged. The Tower's approach and the Children's are simply opposite extremes, and equally justifiable and equally flawed.
