I never really understood this part of the story. I mean, I suppose if their entire plan was to convert him to the shadow, then that's just fine, but it always seemed a little silly to me. Also, when Ishy fought Rand in the first two books, why didn't he ever use the one power? I mean, if I were honestly trying to kill the dude, I'd just blow him up. Maybe I'm really a moron and missing something here. If so, please tell me, because this really ruins my whole suspension of disbelief deal.
As the champion of the Light, Ishmael wants Rand to voluntarily go over to the Shadow.
His taunting seems to be designed to make Rand lose his temper, undermine his confidence and therefore lose control which will give Ishmael the edge.
Having said that, in the face to face combats (Great Hunt and Dragon Reborn), Ishmael is not just taunting Rand but actually trying to beat him. My view is that despite what Ishmael says, Rand is too strong in the power and LTT is guiding him with his superior AOL knowledge.

He's crazy. Batshit insane. All of his dogs aren't barking. He's a couple cans short of a 6pack. *NM*
