Despite knowing that he does everything for the greater good of the country, do you REALLY think people would like him for all this? Do you think YOU would?
If I am presented with a choice of 1)everyone and everything dies and 2) by following a certain leader there is a chance for survival of me and others, then the choice to me would be obvious. I would be great-full for the chance, and both respect and like the leader for at least giving me that. Do you really think that you wouldn't?
Characters don't operate from our 20/20 hindsight we have when we're reading these books. They operate from within in the world. Rand could have the best PR in the world, and people would still fear him, resent the prophecy he carries on his back, and wish him ill, in hope that by removing the Dragon Reborn, they can prevent prophecy. Dim sighted, but understandable.
I think Thom in Tear shows otherwise. A few words here, a little innuendo there seemed to influence those around him.
All good things come to those who wait.
Rand needs a publicist
