I've never really understood all the criticism CoT got/get.
I've always considered Wheel of Time to consist of three trilogies 1-9 and two prologues 10-11:
1-3 Beginning,introducing major characters, plot culminating with Rand accepting and proclaing himself the Dragon Reborn.
4-6 Rand acting as TDR, confronting the Forsaken, expanding and consolidating his power, beginning with the Aiel, and Aes Sedai physically and symbolically bowing to his will, it becomes obvious he is the one that breaks all bonds.
7-9 The twilight period. The expanding of the plot on a global scale, Asha'man becoming a growing source of military power, Rand facing resistance from all sides amongst them the Seanchan, his growing descent into madness, being physically broken down, the forsaken unifying under Moridins control, the Dark One increasingly affecting the world (the heat), culminating with cleansing of saidin.
10 Giving us a big update on most major characters place in the plot and the world. I consider it as one big prologue to prepare us for Knife of Dreams 
11. The beginning of the End. Preparations for Tarmon Gai'don begins on a grand scale. Dark One causing ripples through the Pattern, The remaining 7 free forsaken are probably all in place for the coming battle. Rand losing control, becoming physically damaged, mentally unstable. Dark Tower revealed to be divided.
12-14 (12) Tarmon Gai'don
This is just my view of the whole thing. Anybody agree or disagree?
I think this Vangelis music will fit with the dramatic moments of Tarmon gai'don.
