I think it would have been great if Elyas was one of the main characters. He's really cool.
That trait is what separates most of the main characters from the badass second tier types. Thom, Lan, even Julin and Domon and various Aes Sedai could be pretty cool, but they all have settled into their places in the world, rather than try to right matters.
