Yeah I think that is by far the most interesting aspect of Perrin's plotline

One of the unique aspects about Hopper is that he is not a human, he's a wolf. The narrative tries hard to make this clear, I believe--they have their own set of morals different from ours, and RJ/Sanderson give us hints here and there at how different their world is to ours. Sure, by human standards, Hopper is a homicidal maniac--I completely agree with you. By wolf standards, he's just, well, a wolf.
I don't blame Hopper for thinking and doing as he does--we don't say a Lion is a "terrible animal" if it attacks a gazelle--it's just how lions are. But we CAN blame Perrin for allowing Hopper's wolf-mentality to guide Perrin into performing acts that are undoubtedly maniacal by human standards. The Pattern may want Perrin to accept his wolf brothers, but he should only use them as a tool; they cannot inform his judgment.
IMO, the hammer and the axe represent more than the builder/destroyer; they also represent his constant struggle for humanity against the insanity of the wolves. I hope he plants himself firmly back in the world of man to keep from losing his mind.

That is, how he will stop himself from going insane. I will honestly be very surprised if the wolves 'win' in that regard.
But I have to disagree with the two of you on this point: I don't think Hopper is really any more a 'homicidal maniac' than Rand is, for example. He's just out there to do the dirty work and kick the ass that needs kicking. In t'a'r/the Wolf Dream, his main job is to protect Perrin. We see this in a number of ways, from him physically guarding him, to attacking potential threats, to warning Perrin that he is in the Dream too strongly, etc. He's not a maniac who kills everything. There is a purpose and method to it and honestly I don't see how Cannoli can think he has helped the Shadow.

I like Hopper and enjoy his scenes. I wish he'd rip the throat out of "Young Bull". *NM*

If Hopper wasn't a homocidal maniac, some of the best Children of the Light would not hate Perrin

Did I say he had? In fact I said the opposite. Why trust the opinions of one so poor at reading?

They didn't "usurp" anything. Ailron still reigned and even had his own independant army
