Right. Moiraine's captivity also served to keep Mat occupied until the start of TG. RandAllThor Send a noteboard - 15/08/2010 04:32:24 PM
people have been looking forward to moiraine rescue for ages (not me, i hate the bitch)

and they show different approaches to "handling" the dragon reborn, all the AS have different opinions on it. some even thought they could just keep him in the WT and wheel him out at TG. at first moiraine was intent on bullying and coercion to direct rand, but in the end realised that the dragon is a cure that is almost as bad as the disease and he must dominate and wreck the world a bit before he can help it. she accepted he's in charge and the most she can do is be there to help him when he came asking for him and suggest rather demand a course of action. from what i remember she's the only AS to think like this and rand needs moiraine back to help guide him and to restore his trust in at least one AS

i can see with moiraine's return a return to the rand before he became so hard, maybe if he can "forgive" himself for her death he can also let go of that morbid list of dead women he carries in his head. remember that moiraine is the one that he always focuses on.

cadsuane wasn't a replacement character, but she was in a way his replacement guide who i think has done as much harm as good, while her intentions were right and her advise sound she did not know how to deal with rand.

she thought she could be stubborn and force him, but she forgot that rand's a woolheaded two rivers man who's as stubborn as a mule!

At first when I 'met' Cadsuane in the story she seemed like a replacement for Moiraine, and even though her attitude is far less subtle and mysterious than Moriane's was I still saw her as the 'replacement character.

So what do you think was RJ's purpose of putting her in the storyline? Why not just bring Moiraine back 1-3 books ago?

Was there any purpose? Or was RJ just bored of writing for Moiraine and decided he needed a second similar but slightly different person to push Rand?

Personally I never liked Cadsuane as much as Moiraine. She's never had the subtle mystery that surrounded Moiraine like a fog. She's far too confident (up until Rand threatens to kill her on the spot). In fact that's the only time I've seen a human side to her, up until then she knew she was always right, that she could beat any woman or man channeler, even Rand, and 'smack their bottom' etc etc.

Although I did like her smacking Semhirage's bottom.. that was kinda amusing. Still why keep Moiraine away for soooooo long? I think we all thought we were promised to get her back like a decade ago.

Also, the idea of her and Cadsuane working together is just.. boring. I think the most exciting reason to have Cadsuane around is for Moiraine to come back and fight with her BIGTIME. Even though I know that we see Cadsuane's POV and that she is a lightsider, it would be VERY interesting if she somehow was BA all along and Moiraine finally comes back and kills her on the spot.

So again, what was the purpose of Cadsuane? Anyone?
