Re: BS said "there will be consequences from Rand's True Power use." Datakim Send a noteboard - 27/07/2010 04:18:34 AM

A distinct possible consequence, now that Rand has destroyed the CK, is that the amount of saidin he could get from the CK helped him keep the desire to use the TP again at bay. Now, if Rand finds himself in a dark spot or a position of weakness, he might struggle a lot more resisting the temptation to embrace the TP (which gave him a feeling of utter power similar to a far greater amount of saiding that Rand can embrace unaided... the sort of feeling he could reproduce by drawing on the CK and now could only be embracing the TP). Demandred (or Moghedien) experienced something similar - they used the TP only when it was their last chance/last hope (it's not totally unlike how Nynaeve broke her block, except in her despair/darkness she gave up, and this surrender was what she needed. Previously, she could embrace saidar only when she was so blinded by anger she forgot she was surrendering to saidar).

I suspect that BS has already answered that question :)

Q: You mention that Shaidar Haran has quite a few limitations on his power. Can you give us a few concrete examples of these limitations?
A: Shaidar Haran needs a minion to do most of his work for him. Elza was essential to Shaidar Haran in getting things done.

This lead to lots of discussion about swearing to the Shadow – basically, it’s a very bad idea and you forfeit some very basic protections when you do. Shaidar Haran has special power over those that swear to the Dark One, and the Forsaken in particular. I asked about Alviarin’s special mark, and he said Shaidar Haran has similar power over her. The implication is that there are lots of ramifications for swearing to the Dark One. Brandon mentioned that this makes Verin all the more remarkable.

If simply swearing to the DO loses you these "basic protections", then what would actually channeling the very essence of the DO do?

I think by using TP, Rand has lost all of these inherent protections and is now vulnerable to the shadow, including the ability of SH to completely block him from the OP.
