They are a psychotic virus that is part of the plan for the Draka to attack the USA. Cannoli Send a noteboard - 09/09/2009 06:41:18 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Stone dogs vow to never retreat from a battle? I've always taken that to mean that they fight to the death every time they battle.

But in the ACOS prologue, we see Sevanna order that all the spears advance on the Aes Sedai at Dumai's Wells, and then later in the book (Chapter 40, Spears) we see from the POV of Maeric, the Moshaine Sept Chief, and he thinks about some of the Stone Dogs he had waiting as a rear guard. Shouldn't all the Shaido Stone Dogs have died at Dumai's Wells since they never retreat? Or for that matter they should have been dead at Cairhien.

Am I mistaken thinking that Stone Dogs NEVER retreat or is this a mistake by RJ? OR did the Stone Dogs make an exception to the never retreat rule at dumai's Wells?

Seriously though, the wording of the glossary implies they do on a case by case basis. When it is really important and so forth. They don't do it in every case, as that would be incredibly meat-headed even for Aiel, to throw away troops on a recon in force, or a spoiler raid, just because some of them are Stone Dogs. Sometimes retreating is entirely appropriate, but when there are times when someone needs to hold in place and win or die, that is when the Stone Dogs step up. After all, it's not like the Maidens go home after their scouting locates the enemy, or the Red Shields never fight on the front lines...
