It just seems to me that there has to be more to him than the obvious. Jordan never wasted a character. Besides, didn't Matt have a vision of Oliver killing him in one of his previous lives?
Couldn't have been OLVER in a previous life! But seriously, I don't remember this at all. Even if one of the men in Mat's memories (who are not his ancestors nor his past incarnations) was killed by a younger, ugly person, that says nothing about what will happen to Mat. There have been no Min-Viewings, Foretellings, or Dreams of this sort of thing. (And the fact that RJ intended to write outrigger novels about Mat after the end of the story kinda implies his survival, huh?)
The consensus seems to be that Olver's significance to the plot was through the Snakes and Foxes game - to reveal it to the readers, I guess, and maybe remind Mat about its features (like the chants, the fact that you can only win by cheating). It seems to represent Finnland somehow, and of course, Mat's going to be having his Tower of Ghenjei adventure soon.
And Olver made for some entertaining scenes in the stories, too.
