I think Rand is the greatest.
The fact speak for themselves. You can keep your delusion it was a perfectly reasonable scientific venture if you want to. The facts remain they didn't know what they were doing and it went terribly wrong, and obviously they did nothing to repair their mistake, didn't understand how dangerous what they had done was, or what they attempted didn't work. Over a century later, the top Aes Sedai of the Age were still at loss on how to deal with it. Posae wanted to shield the area until a permanent solution could be found.
How can you see the experiment was unreasonable without using hindsight? What reasonable scientist would expect their high energy experiment to unleash the Devil? Perhaps an accident like the explosion that destroyed the Sharom could be anticipated as a low probability disastrous result, but the rest..? Ridiculous.
The scientists working on the Manahattan project thought there was a slight possibility that the atmosphere would ignite as a result of their experiment, but I don't think Luficer opening the gates of hell was on their list.
When the Wolf King carries the hammer, thus are the final days known. When the fox marries the raven, and the trumpets of battle are blown.
