There have been, and most of them were linked in one way or another to millenarist cults and John's Apocalypse (I'm not much for destroying books, but if there's one humanity could done without, it's this one. I can hardly believe there's still people who see it as a religious text), and there's probably some inspiration Jordan derived from that stuff.

Another mass suicide that some elements in common with the Amayar's and that may have made an impression on Jordan as he wrote WOT is the Solar Temple stuff that happened in the 90s in Europe and Canada. The cultists were waiting for portents, and when they got them they killed themselves and poisonned their kids. They were supposed to wake up from the illusion of their present lives and the evils of the world on the planet (sic) Sirius.

But there's really no shortage of stuff like that in distant and recent history, and I don't think Jordan took inspiration from only one of them. Jamestown is likely one of them, and he may have gleaned details from the OTS stuff later on (he must have had the general end of the Amayar long planned when that one happened).

The Amayar made me think immediately of the OTS stuff perhaps mostly because one of their mass suicides took place close to where I live.
