The hand does not actually have anything to do with the channeling its just a mental thing. If that is the case it should not be too much of a problem as Rand has phantom limb sensation i.e. he can still feel his hand and things it should still be there.

All he has to do is raise both arms and if his mind thinks/feels that there are two hands there he should be able to weave away.

The only reason channelers need gestures is a mental condition. It is part of the mindset of learning the weave. In the first 2.5 books, Nynaeve NEEDED her herbs to Heal. It was not that she was weaving her flows through the substances, or imbuing the medicine with Healing properties, it was because she BELIEVED that in order to fix THIS problem, you needed THAT medical treatment, and she did not believe deep down inside that her channeling was sufficient. It was not until they were captives of the bandits in tDR, when Elayne had a skull fracture or something and Nynaeve did not have her herbs and she was forced to do without that she was able to break that condition. It is like the block Theodrin described having. She could not channel unless there was a man she felt strongly about present. She broke her block when they replaced the man who sat in on her lessons with a similar-looking woman, and she channeled believing a man was present. Once it was proven to her that there was no man present, she had no problem channeling. It is the same with any weave. Channelers get locked into a mental habit, and that is what gives them trouble. Since Rand still subconsciously thinks he has fingers, for all intents and purposes, he DOES have them when it comes to channeling. Just as Theodrin was able to channel when she BELIEVED a man was present even if none was, so too can Rand.

And in any event, even if this was not so, he still has the stump. He can simply rip out a single big Arrow of Fire.

You can't just dismiss something because it's mental. Aes Sedai actually cannot channel certain things without gestures. It's like saying that a right-handed person can easily switch to left-handed because it's just mental. At the very least it will take months or years to change that habit and to become good at it.

They cannot do it without the gestures because they don't know any other way. It is difficult to learn a second way, but it IS possible. The gesture is NOT part of the weave and is only necessary because the channeler thinks it is. Mental blocks are all about believing you need a certain condition in order to do whatever you have the block for. As soon as you actually manage to do it without the block's condition, you're cured, which would NOT be the case with a righthander switching to do something lefthanded. If it was a matter of training and conditioning, then Nynaeve might have found it easier to work around her block after the incident in the harbor, but it should not be completely gone, as it is, and as Theodrin had promised her in the previous book. This is often repeated in the series, how once a channeler believes a condition is necessary to channel, it IS necessary for him. Toveine says the same about escaping shields woven by male channelers, Rand notes one of his Asha'henchmen has a block over distances and so on. If there needed to be a physical reality, than Theodrin could not have channeled with a woman she thought was a man present. As long as Rand reflexively makes whatever hand motions go with a weave, he should be able to work the weave, and that in turn should help him break LTT's bad habit of using his fingers to direct the Arrows of Fire.

I don't see what the big deal is anyway. He got along just fine without it for quite a while.
