just throwing out there a thought i had on the issue of opportunity--

Slayer could have been sent to the palace to interrupt the plot being hatched by Rhavin, Graendal and Sammael. that could have been his primary goal. the timing of events works and would place him at least in the vicinity at the time. that would explain how the timing of events caused him to cross paths with Asmo, giving rise to an unplanned opportunity to kill Asmo.
