I definitely think that Rand's only accomplished one thing in his battle against Shai'tan - The Cleansing, with the second major accomplishment actually being overseen by Elayne, Nynaeve and the Circle who used the Bowl of Winds - mainly, prying Shai'tan's grip from it's tightening around the world's throat.
This is just my interpretation though, and I actually think that the Forsaken are being used to distract Rand from his role and where he should be on the "game board" (ie: re-writing the rules to suit what he needs to do).

I totally agree that the Forsaken are merely a distraction. Seems to me that plays into the Lord of Chaos strategy too ... let the FS sit behind the scenes and create chaos, keeping Rand from being effective. It would have been all to easy for the DO to simply order them to all link and crush Rand early on, seems clear to me that the DO needs Rand alive at TG. I think Elza was onto something in her compelled state.
