I don't have any reference materials available to me right now, so I thought I would throw this out there and see if it could possibly have any legs.
What if the killer was Rand himself?
Was he positioned in such a way in the story arc where he could not have done it? Maybe it was an instance of the Lews Therin/madness, perhaps the first instance of lews gaining control. Maybe it was some vestige of a compulsion laid on him by Lanfear (in the event of my death kill Asmo).
Dunno, its a thought and not much more than that at this point. However, I don't recall this particular slant ever being thrown out there before. Thoughts?

There's no reason Asmo would be afraid of Rand, since there's no way he could know that LTT was in charge. If he could tell LTT was in charge, maybe he used MoM to make Rand's body look like his, I still don't think Asmo would have been as scared of him as he is of his killer.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

But Asmodean wasn't killed in TAR. He was killed in the real world.
