Or perhaps the killer wasn't human. The Gholam, or maybe even the Finn's fit the bill there. "You!?" doesn't necessitate that Asmo actually knew who the killer was, just that he at least knew what the killer was.

i agree. the "You" at minimum indicates that the killer was a person he did not expect to see. It may also indicate that he knew the killer and did not expect to see them there.

however, his recognition of the killer can also be based solely on their appearance and/or what they were doing when he saw them.

Further, the fast "you, no"--indicates that the killer is someone Asmo knew would kill him outright.

it can be based on him recognizing the person from personal experience, and knowing they would kill him outright.

However, i see another possibility if recognition was only based on appearance/conduct and not prior experience. The quickly combined recognition and "no" indicates the killer is a person with a strong reputation that running into them is unhealthy.

I've always been under the impression that "You?" was recognition of someone he was surprised to stumble upon and "No!" was a separate reaction to the person making a hostile move such as channeling/weaving/hand-gestures or leading with a weapon (the latter only included for you Slayer-dunnit-fans). I think if the killer had hesitated a moment or two instead of attacking instantly, Asmodean might have followed "You?" with "I can explain." or "How fortuitous to find you here." Rather than "No!" The "No!" was a "wait, don't kill me" in response to an immediate aggressive action on the part of the person he discovered. As far as anyone but Lanfear knew, Asmo was a traitor who had willingly switched sides and was now a dangerous enemy combatant.
