For instance, why did the stones suddenly communicate with the aliens, not Earth? Proximity? Even if so - why? Etc, and so forth.
I'm sure that we'll learn more about it in the future. I personally don't think it would have added anything to the episode to actually know a reason as to why it was that alien. Now that they have been dealt with (for the moment) the characters will have time to come up with explanations. Remember that these people aren't the Carters and Mckays of the the show. They are normal people who don't handle themselves well under pressure.
It's okay - I don't expect them to understand immediately. It just struck me as odd that the stones would make such a fundamental shift in their function. Until now, we've only seen them communicate with their Earth counterparts. Stone to stone, not stone to being, directly. That seems like a big deal, so I hope they eventually uncover why.
The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.
