Jane takes some getting used to, but his cheeky grin makes it all worthwhile. 
It's not meant to be groundbreaking television. It's comfortable stuff, the kind of TV you can relax with after a hard day's work.
As for the serial killer chap: it's a pretty good name, actually, realistic. Newspapers always give crappy names like that to serial killers. It fits.
