I am generally not even a fan of dystopian literature or film, at least when it is too pessimistic, but in BR it all seems to plausible and is so visually stunning that it's hard not to be impressed with their view on the not too distant future.

I think its plausibility is what gets me. I enjoy dystopian literature, but I find most of it is too over the top to be realistic. Blade Runner seemed like something that could just be right around the corner. I like that about it.

You know I never felt bad for the replicants throughout the whole film until Batty changes his mind, saves Deckard and gives his final speech. There you get the glimpse at what those replicants really were about and that they were much more than machines. Up until that scene they were rather one-dimensional (probably intentionally so) and I always felt they deserved to be hunted for being such a threat.

There were glimpses I think. Zhora's frantic running away, Rachel's reaction to finding out she was human, Batty killing Tyrell in an almost child like temper tantrum. They gave you this little glimpse of their humanity, and then like you said...the final speech and Batty changing his mind really drove it home.

It is only a short story, right? I always wanted to check it out and never got around to.

It's a shortish story. I'd call it more a novella than a short story though. It's a bit too long to really be a short story, but a bit too short to be a novel/stand alone book.
