Partially due to having seen some of the movie Serenity before watching much of the show (I had seen two or three of the later episodes on SciFi channel).
The scene in the movie when Simon gives KayLee an extra incentive to live left me with the impression (and backed up with the pre-Out of Gas episodes) that she was a virgin, truly innocent in all ways. Then in Out of Gas you meet her cuz she's banging the previous mechanic!!! Oh shit I thought. Totally changed my perception of KayLee (though I still adore the hell outta her!!).

The arrangement didn't throw me off. It didn't take long to hook me, and I'm glad (now that I love the show) that I did it that way- things are revealed as they should be, imo.
I would NOT watch Out of Gas first. It is very powerful after you already know the characters.

Death to the Regressives of the GOP and the TeaParty. No mercy for Conservatives. Burn them all at the stake for the hateful satanists they are.
Which episode of Firefly would you use to hook someone?

See, I think "Out of Gas" works much better as an introduction to the characters.

Train Job. The pilot is longer and slower to develop, from what I recall.

the pilot is pretty great, agree that shindig or train job or out of gas could also be used
