I figured out the twist well before the reveal, but it alsmost seemed like I expected it because these sorts of films always have a twist and the main character actually being a patient was the most likely twist for that plot to have than because they actually gave me hints. The only hints I really remembered getting were seeing the "patients" he had been interviewing earlier in the film come out of a staff meeting later and the overdone dream sequences, which make more sense once you know the guy is crazy and what happened in his past but at first come across as the director simply trying to be artsy. It's one of those films where I wouldn't mind watching it again on video to see if there were any subtle clues that I missed, but I'm not expecting much. It definitely wasn't one of those films where you smack your forehead at the climax and say "of course!"

As for the rest of it, I thought it was slow at times, and not really all that creepy. The trailers made it look more like a haunted or extremely disturbing place, but it took them forever to actually get into the creepy part of the asylum and they didn't spend much time there. Of course, that's a fault of the advertising, not the film itself.

Also, I've heard this was faithful to the book, but I'm getting a little tired of the Nazis/Holocaust as either the focal point or the backdrop of a film, especially when I went in not expecting it in the slightest. That's a personal preference, however.

Next up is "The Crazies." Hope it's better.
