What does success have to do with quality?

Nothing, the subject line was tongue in cheek.

Cameron's AVATAR is a professionally-executed and technically-impressive movie which is wholly unoriginal and narratively unambitious, but is nevertheless an entertaining popcorn ride. It is nothing more than that.

The animated series is a much more original and altogether better-written story influenced by Asian mythology and spiritualism without getting bogged down by it, with a more satisfying story through-line and a stronger (and more definitive) ending. It's a kid's show, sure, but in that context it does some very ambitious and interesting things, and is also quite funny. Overall, for sheer entertainment value, the animated series wins out.

However, knowing my own taste I am pretty sure I wouldn't love the show as much as I love Cameron's film.
