I LOVE the cartoon. (and re: casting controversy) Darth_Katie Send a noteboard - 10/02/2010 05:27:37 PM
I guess the cartoon fans have to get used to not using the old name now. This teaser trailer was running during the Super Bowl, it seems.

The series finale was fantastic ... just wow. Amazing. I am very sorry that the guys who did the music for the show aren't doing to for the movie too, because the music in the series finale in particular was incredible. I wish Nick would release a soundtrack CD so I can stop listening to the three songs on the Track Team's myspace page on repeat.

The Last Agni Kai and Peace Excerpt are particularly wonderful --> http://www.myspace.com/thetrackteammusicandsound

Anyway, I really really really hope this movie turns out good, but I have some serious doubts. But oh well, the tv series will still be there in all it's glory.

In other news:

Has anyone else heard about the race casting controversy? Despite the fact that the show is pretty much clearly set in Asia (fantasy Asia, if you will, but all the same), all three main characters are being played by white actors ... the difference is especially noticeable in Sokka and Katara, who are basically Inuit in the show. According to site (racebending.com) I've linked, the creators of the show (well, one of them anyway) are not very happy with the choices. I find this interesting and troubling for a couple reasons :

1. The main characters are Caucasian, and the extras are Asian. It's particularly noticeable in the Water Tribe, where the two named main characters are White and the extras are Inuit. Really? Are we really still in this place, Hollywood? There are super unfortunate implications here about race and the media. Does a movie have to have White stars to be successful? Even when it's clearly set in Asia?

2. Having White people pretend to be Asian is more than a little offensive. Think of what Tropic Thunder was satirizing with RDJ playing a dude playing a Black dude playing another dude.

3. The actors they've chosen are relatively unknown anyway, so it's not like they were trying to get big names to draw audiences. Why couldn't they have just picked actors who's ethnicity better reflects the characters they are playing? I'm pretty sure they're out there. I'm pretty sure the guy who played Jasper in Twilight isn't the best you can get.

4. M. Night Shyamalan is Indian himself. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

So the website racebending.com is calling for a boycott of the movie to protest these choices and show Hollywood that racism isn't profitable. Now on one hand, I love justice. But on the other hand, I love Avatar. I think I might just wait and see it on DVD. I feel very conflicted about this. I hope that the movie's good because a live action Avatar would be sweeeeeeeet, but I also kind of want it to suck because then the temptation to go see it won't be as great, and I get the satisfaction of a moral victory. But if it does suck that's probably the last of a Last Airbender live action film we'll ever see ...

Stupid Hollywood, why must you ruin everything??

Oh, and in other news, Aasif Mandvi of the Daily Show is playing Admiral Zhao. I find this hilarious. I wonder how well he'll do playing serious and evil? Of course, Zhao is a giant ham.
Insert theme music here.
