I thought the first movie was pretty decent, the second was OK, and the third was crap. With the steady decline in quality I don't see any reason to keep putting the movies out and devaluing a fantastic franchise somewhat similar to what they did with Batman.

The third one was (probably) mostly crap because Sony wouldn't let Sam Raimi make his own movie - they pretty much forced him to cram Venom in there as well, and most of the things people hate about the third movie seem to be Venom-centric.

Dr Octopus...well I suppose he could come back, but the way they killed him makes it fairly unlikely. Ditto with Sandman.

Ummm... they didn't kill Sandman, actually. And Doc Ock could easily come back, especially via crazy comic-book methods.

What's that leave going forward? The Vulture? Kraven? Rhino? Elektro?

Well, apparently John Malkovich had just agreed to play the Vulture in the fourth movie. Rhino would've been a good cold-open villain fight, I think; same with Electro. And actually I think Kraven might be a villain that could carry the focus of a movie. The Black Cat and the Lizard would also be fun to see.

Long story short - I would've been interested to see another Raimi movie, but in all honesty I'm sure the studio would've forced enough changes to make another Spider-Man 3 debacle in the long run. That means I'm not particularly interested in seeing the studio get to run with the ball all on their own.
