I really hated that aspect of the episode too.... Brian Send a noteboard - 25/11/2009 08:16:58 AM
I mean, so many were so good...my favorites were Jaynestown, Out of Gas, War Stories, The Message, and Objects in Space. If I had to pick just one of those...I guess it would be Objects in Space. I think that episode had everything, it was sad, it was funny, it was tense...it was everything I loved about the series all wrapped up in one really awesome episode.

As for Castle...sorry, I don't watch.

There's a lot to like about The Message, no doubt about it. It has all the makings of an awesome episode. But I always get caught up on the fact that the entire tension with Tracy near the end hinges 100 percent on the fact that Mal doesn't just open his mouth and tell Tracy the plan. I know it wouldn't have made for a very exciting episode, loses all the dramatic tension, and doesn't let Mal be carrying the bullet that ends him, but it's the simplest solution in the entire verse. And when all the tension relies on a problem that has a simple and beyond-obvious solution, but no one takes advantage of it, it irks me, just a little.

Every time I watch it I'm just like "would someone please open their damn mouth!!" It seems like such a simple common sense thing to do....but then I started thinking about it, and it seems to really fit in with Mal's character. I still don't like that part of it, because it still seems like when he realized it could turn violent that he should have said something, but throughout the series when someone tried to make him do something he usually just dug in harder and refused to change course.

I guess the rest of the episode just made up for that shortcoming for me. I loved River's trouble eating the ice planet, Jane's hat, and so much else about the episode that it just outweighed that one annoyance. I can totally see why some people would put that in their list of least favorite episodes though.
