They found out that Angela was still legally married to some guy she had met in Fiji. They tracked the guy down, but he didn't want to sign divorce papers because he still loved Angela. Eventually, he became convinced that Angela and Hodgins should be together and signed the papers. In the meantime, though, Angela and Hodgins started having issues because of his presence, and decided that deep down, they didn't really trust each other enough to be together.
The show's writers are normally better than that.
Also: the whole marriage being valid thing was also crazy. No name on the certificate? Bah.
