That and plenty cheese-factor. The characters on the other 2 shows just didn't act like people, didn't display any real emotion (almost as if the actors didn't know how to act). Whereas SGU the characters truly do show emotion. Anger, sadness, despair. Even love. But that stuff was practically non-existent on SG1 and SGA.
I've been re-watching all SG-1s and I think I've got the not-love for Universe figured out. SG-1 is sooo hokey. Some episodes are great and deep, but there is always hokey. Universe feels more like a regular, modern prime-time show. Not a bad thing, just not as much of a hook and endearment for me.
Death to the Regressives of the GOP and the TeaParty. No mercy for Conservatives. Burn them all at the stake for the hateful satanists they are.
Stargate Universe: Anyone still watching?

It's no BSG replacement for me, but I enjoy it more than SG-1/Atlantis. *NM*

Yes, though it needs some better stories. Though, as you say, Time was good.

I still like it. Can't really say I love it, but it's been interesting enough.
