Ignoring wonderful and original science-fiction films like Moon and District 9 from just this year. Furthermore, I would argue that Wall-E is science-fiction too. This author makes me angry.
While District 9 did well, it was basically a remake of Alien Nation. I liked it, but it was rehash.
Moon did not do that well. Maybe it did well critically, but it was not a big, genre-defining film like he's referencing. Matrix was a film that revitalized/forced a genre into the mainstream, and has spawned countless copies (including 2 horrible sequels).
Wall-E is Pixar, and doesn't even really fit for that reason if no other. But for all it's critical acclaim, it is nowhere near the popularity of Cars and Toy Story, two previous Pixar giants in animation.
Top class mob film? Something like the wonderful The Departed from 2006?
Unoriginal remake of a superior Japanese film.
Man, this critic is myopic.
To be fair, a couple of your examples clearly fall within the areas he's criticizing as Hollywood playing it safe.

I am so sick of procedurals, medical dramas/comedies, and lawyer shows.
